In a significant turn of events, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has granted a 24-hour grace period to international flights despite ongoing disruptions caused by a widespread strike. The strike, orchestrated by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), comes in response to the Federal Government’s reluctance to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

From the early hours of the morning, the domestic wings of the airport, known as MMA2 and the General Aviation Terminal (GAT or MMA1), were completely inaccessible. Aviation unions took firm action by sealing the gates, effectively leaving hundreds of travelers stranded and disrupting the usual buzz of domestic travel.
The decision to keep the international terminal operational for an additional day provides a temporary respite for international travelers, who can still catch their flights without interruption. According to the Secretary-General of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the closure of domestic terminals follows direct orders from both the NLC and TUC.
He further emphasized that the current exemption for the international terminals is temporary, with plans to extend the strike there by the following day if the unions’ demands are not met. “As long as the directives from NLC and TUC remain, the strike action would continue,” he stated.
