In an unprecedented move, the heartbeat of Nigeria’s power sector has come to a standstill. Organized labor groups within the nation’s electricity industry have effectively shut down operations, bringing major sub-sectors, including the national grid, power generation, and distribution, to a complete halt.

Dominic Igwebike, the Acting General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), confirmed to Vanguard the comprehensive lockdown of the power sector. “The entire framework of our electricity supply, including the national grid, the distribution companies (DISCOs), and the generation companies (GENCOs), are all under lockdown,” Igwebike said. This action is in line with directives issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), aiming to address pressing issues within the sector.

This shutdown marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s energy history and raises questions about the implications for everyday citizens and the economy at large. As the situation unfolds, the nation watches and waits, hoping for a resolution that brings light back to the homes and industries of millions.
