As Nigeria faces significant economic hurdles, former President Muhammadu Buhari has emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency in food production. In a heartfelt message to the nation during the festive Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, Buhari encouraged all Nigerians to cultivate their own food as a response to rising prices and to support national sustenance.

Speaking in Daura, Katsina, after Eid prayers, alongside Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk, the Emir of Daura, Buhari, shared insights on the country’s pressing economic challenges. His sentiments were conveyed through a statement released by his media aide, Garba Shehu, and posted on the social media platform X.

Buhari’s statement stressed, “In these times of economic difficulty, it is crucial we become self-reliant. As we witness the escalating cost of living, supporting locally produced goods becomes not just beneficial but necessary.”

The former president also raised concerns about the rapid population growth, suggesting it could pose significant challenges for future generations if not appropriately managed. He advocated for enhanced discussions and investments in education and health to address these issues.

“The immense gatherings during Eid in Daura highlight the urgent need for more profound discussions on population control,” Buhari stated, as reported by The Guardian.

Furthermore, addressing the youth, Buhari called on them to engage actively in nation-building efforts and seek inspiration from the nation’s founding fathers and influential regional figures.

“I encourage our youth to delve into the history of our founding fathers and the distinguished personalities from their regions, drawing inspiration to foster a better future,” he said.

In addition to addressing economic and demographic challenges, Buhari highlighted the role of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in promoting national unity. He interacted with NYSC members who traditionally paid their respects during Sallah, acknowledging their vital contribution to the country.

In related developments, the Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, advocated for a transition to ranching as a viable and sustainable alternative to traditional open grazing, addressing the region’s insecurity and agricultural issues.

Buhari’s call for unity and mutual support resonates as the nation moves forward, particularly during challenging times. His closing message was solidarity and hope: “Let us be our brothers’ keepers and support one another during this season. I wish everyone a joyful Sallah.”

This emphasis on self-reliance and community support addresses the immediate economic challenges and fosters a sense of collective responsibility among Nigerians during these testing times.
